Yesterday and the preceding days before that – for as long as I can remember in fact – my daughter would not eat a banana – no matter how hungry she was. What does she ask for last night when we start packing lunch boxes?! A bloody BANANA!!!
Well of course I haven’t bought bananas, have I? Because they become a deep shade of vrot before anyone wants to eat them.
What is it with children that one day they love eating some or other food and the very next day when you offer it to them, their reaction would make you think you were offering them squid heads on a bed of brussel sprouts? As used to this as I am, it does still get me every time and I have to check myself, take a deep breath and remember it’s the little things. Is it the end of the world that they won’t eat that specific food? Probably not, and yes my blood does still boil because (as with so many people of my generation) I was brought up not to leave a thing on my plate and not to waste anything. “You know, there is a child somewhere out there who doesn’t have any food at all.” I’m still trying to work out how we fell for that one!!! How did my eating all my food, make that specific situation any better?!
Anyhow, I digress! Is it important that they eat everything and anything? Probably not. Is it important that they at least try something before saying: “I don’t LIIIIIKKKKKEEEE that!”? Yes, absolutely.
So from now on, I am going to try and do some (more) self-talk and remind myself that I have healthy children, who do eat pretty well and if one day they don’t like something they have always eaten, and vice versa, well ce la vie. There are bigger fish to fry 🙂
